Get an EAN barcode for your product

The important thing to note is that each variation of each product you sell requires a unique barcode, and that determines how many GTINs you need. Each product variant (size, color, flavor, etc.) needs a unique GTIN code. For example, if the product has four different color and four different size options, you need a total of 16 GTIN codes for it. Please note that also the different packaging levels of the product hierarchy (sales lot, transport packaging, pallet, etc.) usually need their own code.

GTIN identifiers and EAN barcodes are generated using the GS1 Company Prefix. GS1 Finland sells GS1 Company Prefixes with four different sizes of GTIN code packages: 10 codes, 100 codes, 1,000 codes or 100,000 codes. Furthermore, there is a specific Company Prefix for the encoding of products with variable weight. You should assess the need for codes a few years ahead and choose a GS1 Company Prefix accordingly. This way, the number space is enough for a longer period of time, and you don't have to get a new company identifier so soon.

You will receive the GS1 Company Prefix and a certificate you ordered by e-mail. On the last page of the certificate you can find a list of the GTIN codes issued to you (except for the 7-digit Company Prefix).

We will also send you by email the IDs you can use to log in to the GS1 Rekisteri through the OmaGS1 portal. Use of the GS1 Rekisteri is included in the annual fee for the GS1 Company Prefix. In the service, you can create and manage your GTIN codes and barcodes.
