SSCC

When a pallet or other logistic unit is sent to a recipient and you want to track it in the supply chain, you use the GS1 logistic unit identifier, the SSCC (Serial Shipping Container Code). While a GTIN is a product identifier that identifies, for example, a retail product or its sales batch, an SSCC identifies each logistic unit being shipped, such as a pallet, roll box or package. A logistic unit is any packaging unit used for both transportation and storage, that is handled in the supply chain.

GS1 Company Prefix

To generate SSCCs for your product, you need to have a GS1 Company Prefix. You can use the GS1 Company Prefix you acquired to generate GTINs to generate SSCCs.

GS1-128 barcode

A GS1-128 barcode is used to mark pallets. In addition to the GTIN of the product contained in the package, it can encode additional information, such as the batch number and/or date information using GS1 application identifiers. The GS1-128 barcode is not intended to be read by a cash register.

Pallet label

Pallets contain several individual consumer packages or sales lot packages and are marked with pallet labels according to the GS1 standard, also called European Logistic Label, ELL pallet labels or SSCC pallet labels. The pallet label for each pallet is unique; it contains the SSCC of that particular logistic unit. This allows the pallet to be tracked throughout the entire supply chain.

Retailers and wholesalers require standard format pallet labels because they are a prerequisite for efficient logistics. For example, in an automated logistics center, product identification and efficient movement of products are based on the correctness and legibility of the labels. Incomplete labels lead to an increase in errors and cause delays in the supply chain, which you as a supplier may have to compensate for.
