GS1 Synkka – Storing packaging data
Selecting a packaging type
The packaging is intended for the preservation, protection or transportation of a product. One packaging type is maintained for a product. The packaging type is selected based on:
- where the product is physically, where it is kept
- from where the end user uses or buys the product
- what determines the shape of the product, e.g. bottle or bag.
Examples of packaging types:
- A ready-made meal packed in a box, with a wrapper around it: select box as the packaging type
- A bottle of wine in a gift box: select bottle as the packaging type
- Sausage in a bag: select bag as the packaging type
- Nuggets in a plastic box: select box as the packaging type
- A ready-made baguette in a paper wrapper: select wrapper as the packaging type
- Consumer assortment, e.g. cookie bag: select bag as the packaging type
- A foodservice product, e.g. 5 kg shredded cabbage box: box is selected as the packaging type

Package type supplementary information
With the supplementary information, you can provide additional information related to the packaging. In addition, you can tell more about the characteristics of the packaging in the Marketing text (id 1083) field, for example "a bottle of wine is in a wooden gift box". You can also use the product image to illustrate the packaging of the product, for example a picture of a perfume bottle in a box.
Selection of packaging function
Select the function that your packaging has, for example protective gas packaging, vacuum packaging or gift packaging. (id 1708)
Defining a packaging part
The Packaging Material Element Code (id 5236) is linked to the declaration of packaging material. A packaging part cannot be the product packaging on its own, but can be separated from the packaging, for example a cap or lid.
First, declare the packaging material and then state which part of the packaging the packaging material information applies to. Specify the packaging part and its material even when the packaging consists of only one part, for example a can. In that case, the value Main packaging is selected as the packaging part.
Example: Jam jar packaging parts
- Glass jar: Packaging Material Element Code (id 5236) is Main package type
- Lid: Packaging Material Element Code is Lid
- Label: Packaging Material Element Code is Label
Defining packaging material and its weight
Define packaging materials for all retail products, their cases and pallets. Also declare the packaging materials for recyclable packaging, such as pallets and transboxes.
Select a packaging material from the code list and enter the quantity. Maintain packaging material information using the Packaging Material Type Code (id 1732) and Packaging material composition quantity (id 1744) information. Enter the weight of the packaging material in grams.
Difference between mono and multi-plastics
State the plastic type of the packaging as accurately as possible. When reporting plastics, note the differences between mono and multi-plastics.
Monoplastics | Unspecified multi-plastic |
Plastic type that contains only one plastic Plastic type is known Ex. Plastic: Polyethylene (PE), Polystyrene (PS) | Plastic that contains at least two different plastic types Plastic types cannot be separated or specified
|
Reporting composite materials
A composite material contains at least two different materials that cannot be separated from each other. The materials can be specified, i.e. identified.
Report all materials in the combination separately as follows:
- Select Combination or Laminated cardboard as the value for Packaging Material Type Code (id 1732)
- Report the total weight in the field Packaging material composition quantity (id 1744)
- Report the materials in the combination as specified Combination: packaging material (id 1753)
- Report the amount of material Composite material detail packaging material type code (id 1754). The other materials in the combination are reported in the same way.
Reporting the origin of packaging material
With the information Packaging Raw Material Code (id 4666) you report the origin of the packaging material you provided, for example biological plastic or recycled material.
With the information Packaging Raw Material Content Percentage (id 4667) you report how much of the reported material is of that origin, for example a plastic bottle, part of the material of which is recycled material.
Reporting the origin of packaging material for composite materials
You can also provide origin information for composite materials. You maintain it in conjunction with the composite material information.
Example: the first material of a composite material, its weight and origin
Example: the second material of a composite material, its weight and origin
