Product identifiers for marketplaces

GS1 GTINs improve the discoverability of products on marketplace platforms, as well as in search engine results and ads.

More and more marketplaces are requiring GTINs

Marketplaces such as Amazon and eBay offer global sales platforms that enable even small businesses to reach millions of customers. On many marketplaces, such as Amazon, the Global Trade Item Number (GTIN)—a global product identifier compliant with GS1 standards—is mandatory. Many other marketplaces are also transitioning to GTINs, so by labeling your products according to the standard, you can avoid having them removed from the platform.

If your product already has a GTIN, you don’t need a new code to sell your product on marketplaces. If you’re not yet a GS1 customer, you can get started by ordering a GS1 Company Prefix.

Identify your products worldwide

GS1 Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) uniquely identifies a product. It provides products and packages with a globally unique identity.

Retailers have been using GTINs and the EAN barcodes generated from them to identify products for over 50 years. Exactly the same product identifiers are also used on marketplaces. They are used to list and offer products for consumers to purchase.

GS1 is the only official provider of GTINs in Finland and abroad.

Get better visibility for your product

On marketplaces, product differentiation is critical. GTINs allow products to be assigned to the correct categories, ensuring they appear in the right search results. GTINs therefore improve a product’s discoverability not only on the marketplace platform, but also in Google Shopping ads and Google’s organic search results.

Build consumer trust

Distinguishing genuine products from imitations and counterfeits is one of the major challenges facing marketplaces. GTINs boost consumer confidence by verifying a product’s authenticity and original source. This is particularly important on marketplaces where competition is fierce and consumers are concerned about product authenticity.
