GS1 Rekisteri – Creating a barcode

In the GS1 Rekisteri, you can create a barcode for your GTIN. However, make sure that the print quality of the barcode is sufficient to scan it.

The 13 digit GTIN code is placed on the product as a barcode, so that it can be quickly and easily read at cash registers and in the supply chain. In most cases, a packaging designer or a printing house will only need a GTIN code, whose series of numbers they themselves convert into a barcode for the printed material. If you print the barcode yourself, make sure that the print quality is sufficient to read the barcode. Please note that for consumer products, the barcode is created from the 13-digit GTIN code, i.e. remove the leading zero if you create the barcodes yourself.

Create a barcode for the GTIN

You can create a barcode when entering or editing product information. Alternatively, on the GTINs tab you can find a Barcode button in the Actions column.  You can save the barcode in PNG format via the Download button.

Select the correct barcode type

Depending on the type of your GS1 Company Prefix, you can make either an EAN barcode or a UPC barcode for the consumer product.

For the higher levels of the packaging hierarchy (case, pallet), you can use either the GTIN-13 or GTIN-14 code:

  • The GS1 Rekisteri automatically turns the GTIN-14 code into a barcode in the format ITF-14, which is not readable by cash registers. It is not recommended for use on anything other than barcodes printed directly on corrugated cardboard.
  • If the transport package can be sold as is to the consumer, it must be marked with an EAN-13 barcode so that it can be read by cash register terminals.
