Linking animal welfare information to the product
The Animal Welfare Verification System project, a joint project between the Natural Resources Institute Finland and companies, is developing a science-based system for assessing, verifying and utilising animal welfare information in the food chain. GS1 Finland is participating in the project with a parallel project Linking Animal Welfare Information to the Product, which investigates ways to communicate verified animal welfare information effectively using GS1 standards.
The parallel project will explore opportunities to integrate value-adding animal welfare information into products and explore solutions to share information between trading partners from different data sources using global standards and digital solutions. The goal is to create a model where verified animal welfare information can be integrated with product information, for example through 2D codes – and to do so in a way that supports all parties in the value chain.
Tasks and objectives
- define the welfare information to be attached to the product in accordance with the GDSN product data standard
- develop solutions to transmit data using the GS1 2D code
- identify the needs for transmitting animal welfare information and define a solution for smooth data sharing.
Project work packages
- Research into the possibilities of decentralised data management of product and production data in the food sector
- Transferring animal welfare data to the consumer (GS1 2D code on the product)
- Animal welfare information data model
- Sharing verified data
