Service for managing cattle location data required by the EU Deforestation Regulation
The EU Deforestation Regulation requires strict monitoring and transparency regarding the origin of products and raw materials covered. In the case of beef, this means that all locations where the animal has been kept during its lifetime must be identified by giving the geolocation, and it must be ensured that no deforestation has taken place at the location since 2020. In addition, the operator placing the product on the market must submit a due diligence declaration for each batch to the EU Commission's EUDR database.
Tasks and objectives
In the development project, food companies are working with GS1 Finland to build a service that maintains
- all cattle location data with geolocation in accordance with regulatory requirements
- producers' assurances that no deforestation has occurred at these locations since 2020.
The new service enables the transfer of data from primary production to food companies. The data is transferred from the service to the companies' own systems, through which the necessary information is forwarded to the authorities and, for example, to stores as despatch advice.
Schedule
The service will be opened for producers in late autumn 2025 and will be fully operational when the regulation comes into force on December 30, 2025.
